On June 9th 1892, Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov was born. He was a famous Soviet aircraft designer nicknamed "the king of fighters". He designed dozens of aircraft, including the Po-2, I-15 and I-16, which made up a significant part of the USSR's air force from 1939-1941.

The I-153-M62 which was flown at the start of the Second World War by ace Sergei Yakovlevich Zhukovsky is equipped with four 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns.
